AFC Fylde Preview
By Zach Thomas
This Tuesday sees the Lambs make the five-hour round trip to the Northwest to take on Lancashire side AFC Fylde.
Andy Peaks’ side will be hoping to make it three wins in a row, after defeating Braintree Town 1-0 on Saturday. A 93rd minute winner from midfielder Tom Tonks saw Tamworth take home all three points, in a true smash and grab performance.
The first half was an evenly contested affair as neither of the two sides really created any chances that troubled each others goalkeepers.
Braintree were on top for most of the second 45, as they new signee Jermaine Francis looked dangerous down the right-hand side for the Iron, but they struggled to find the back of the net.
Andy Peaks looked to his bench in order to try and change the game, as Dan Creaney and Tom Tonks entered the field on and made an instant impact.
Creaney found the back of the net on minute 93, but the linesman had raised his flag for offside, in what looked like a very close call.
Thirty seconds later, Tonks put in a strong tackle 30 yards out from goal, and the ball curled and dipped over the goalkeeper and into the side of the net, which caused scenes amongst the players and the travelling Tamworth fans.
The win saw Tamworth up to 18th place in the table on 11 points with a game in hand on most teams in and around the relegation zone.
Our hosts, Fylde, sit two positions below us, after drawing one all with mid-table Woking on the weekend. The Coasters, who are without a permanent manager after Chris Beech departed eight days ago, are currently being led by former Aston Villa player Nathan Delfouneso. The ex-striker coached his side to their third draw of the season, after Nick Haughton’s screamer was cancelled out by a Woking equaliser from substitute Lewis Walker.
Haughton’s goal saw his tally go up to eight in nine games, a fantastic start to the season by the number 10, and a player that the Tamworth defence should look out for and try to stop his brilliant scoring run.
We look forward to travelling to AFC Fylde and hope to see you Lambs fans make the long trip along with us.
