Boston United vs Tamworth Preview

By Zach Thomas

Tamworth will make the trip for the second time this season, as Lincolnshire side Boston United will host the Lambs on Saturday at 3pm.

It will be the third time in two seasons that the two clubs have met, as the Pilgrims competed against Tamworth twice in the league last season and were eventually promoted via the playoffs after finishing sixth, defeating Brackley Town 2-1 back in May. Boston, formed back in 1933, are currently managed by Ian Culverhouse, a former defender who made senior appearances for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton and Hove Albion and, most notably, Norwich City during his playing career. Culverhouse then went on to become assistant manager to Scotsman Paul Lambert, at clubs such as Aston Villa and Norwich City, before dropping down to non-league to become head coach of King’s Lynn Town in 2017. Since then, he has managed many different non-league sides, before being appointed as Boston Head Coach back in September 2022.

At present, the team in black and yellow sit bottom of the table on zero points, having lost their three opening matches. This past Tuesday, the Pilgrims were defeated 2-0 by Southend United. Boston trailed after 69 seconds through a goal by Cameron Gregory, before Southend doubled their lead when Gus Scott-Morris’s grabbed their second.

This season’s Boston side includes experienced defender Michael Bostwick. The 36-year-old joined United last year and played a vital role in helping the club secure promotion, scoring in both penalty shoot outs in the Playoff Quarterf inals and Semi finals.

Likewise, Tamworth are also struggling with their return to the Vanarama National League, as Andy Peaks’ side haven’t gained a point since their opening day one all draw with Sutton. A tough 1-0 loss on Tuesday night to Hartlepool United saw the Lambs lose their second game on the bounce. Tamworth were very unlucky not to come away with a point as they were the better side against Hartlepool, and had many chances to equalise, especially in the dying embers of the game, when they struck the woodwork twice in quick succession.

The Lambs will be hoping to gain their first three points of the season away at the Jakemans Community Stadium, and we look forward to seeing you support the Lambs from the stands.
