After the goalless draw away at Southport a week earlier, Andy Peaks took his Lambs to the home of the Ravens for their Emirates FA Cup Third Qualifying Round tie with £5,652 up for grabs to the team that progresses and £1,875 to the team that doesn’t.
Tamworth kicked off the match, attacking the home end of the segregated ground but an offside flag quickly halted Deacon’s early thoughts of dampening the home faithful’s spirits..
Coalville enjoyed more of the early possession and a fourth minute corner had to be deal with, but York needed treatment on 5 and was unable to continue to was quickly replaced by Shaw before play resumed.
One time Lamb Carter had to take the ball away from keeper White and Deacon on 9 but Cullinane-Liburd’s long throw was cleared, and his ball back in similar disposed of, however Finn took it down the right and the resulting cross from Curley looped into the keeper’s arms.
At the other end McGlinchey fired low from the left wide of the far post via a touch from Singh for a corner on the right which was booted away by Jellis and gave The Lambs the chance to keep the ball for a while and try and get a grip on proceedings to their own liking.
They continued in this vein in the coming minutes, with Finn Tshikuna, and Jellis all linking and Arlott-John trying to skip and weave his way through the Raven’s defence on the left, but when it seemed that he may have been pushed off the ball in the area the referee immediately waved away any penalty claims.
Singh was called upon to deny a left sided strike by McGlinchey on 25 after the forward had forged some space for himself and unleashed a goal bound effort, and The Lambs raced to the other end and forced a corner but Cockerill-Mollett’s looping angled header towards the top right corner was easy for White to take at height.
A fine cross field pass from the same player found Finn in the box on the right on 28, but despite good first touch to bring the ball down White was quick to it and the chance was gone.
Gascoigne needed prolonged on the field treatment after a clash on the half hour, and while he finished his treatment off the field Tamworth attacked through Arlott-John and Deacon, forcing a corner on the left on 33 and then a throw from Cullinane-Liburd which was cleared and fell to Doyle-Charles who tried his luck from 35 yards but shot high wide and over the away fans stand.
Jellis did well to get the better of his marker on the right wing on 37 and whipped the ball into the box looking for Arlott-John, but it was taken off his toes and out for a corner which resulted in a packed 6 yard box and a strong defensive clearance.
Finn found space on the right of the box on 43 to fire a shot at White which the keeper fumbled and he followed in to try and force the ball home, but caught the keeper, and the booking for Finn was justified, but White could have won an Oscar for his theatrics, and his smile at the fans behind the goal showed it was nowhere near as bad as he had made out.
Four minutes added time were shown and despite a couple of foray’s forwards from both sides, a goalless first half was a fair reflection at the break.
The Ravens restarted the game with a light rain shower threatening to persist, as The Lambs looked to net in front of the almost 300 travelling supporters, but the opening 5 minutes of the half did nothing to suggest either side would make an early breakthrough.
The first chance of the second half came on 54, but Finn’s strike from 25 yards rose over the target and did not trouble White at all.
A long deep pass from Cockerill-Mollett was taken well on his chest by Tshikuna with just White to beat on 58, but he had strayed offside to gain the advantage and so play halted as quickly as the Lambs fans urged him to score, and with the ball rallying from end to end via a hefty boot, it was more like a tennis match than a football one.
Gascoigne slipped and allowed Cook half a sight on goal on 60 but he and Cullinane-Liburd recovered sufficiently to disrupt his thought patterns and his intentions were squashed.
Coalville too heart from the move though, and Berridge nearly connected with a bouncing pass on 62, and Gascoigne went down again on 65 requiring a visit form the physio but he was unable to continue in the first of two changes by Peaks with just over 20 to play as Fairlamb made his first appearance of the season.
Cooked forced a corner on the left on 74 which Singh took easily and Tamworth broke quickly but the fibak ball for Jellis in the box was too high and Coalville had been able to regroup.
Berridge powered a cross at Cockerill-Mollet in the area on 80 ad Cullinane-Liburd headed the resulting corner firmly away from the pack of home players getting ready to pounce.
Coalville substitute Pennant drilled his cross against Curley and out for another corner, on 86, and again Cullinane-Liburd headed it away but Carter’s ball back in went out for another flagkick, on the opposite side, which was eventually cleared after a game of heading-tennis.
But The Lambs kept on pushing and when the ball fell for Milnes from Finn’s pass, 20 yards out, he picked his spot into the far left corner past White to send the travelling fans into a state of delirium (0-1, 89 mins)
And with Scunthorpe being beaten in their replayed league fixture, it looked like it would be a good day for Lambs fans, and it definitely was deep into the six added minutes when Jellis sprinted through the back line and although Deacon was there with him he dropped his shoulder, picked his spot and made it 2-0 with a low strike into the same side of the net past White. (2-0, 90+4 mins)
And so the final whistle blew shortly afterwards to put Tamworth into the hat for the next round draw on Monday.
