3-0
Peterborough Sports
The four match unbeaten Lambs (one loss in 5) made a quick return to the Compare The Build Community Stadium on the back of their 2-1 midweek victory over Chorley which had lifted the side up to 2nd in the National League North.
Peterborough Sports, who had been reprieved a threatened demotion following completion of ground works during the summer, came into the game with just one win in 5.
With the higher echelons of football on a domestic break, National League TV were back at The Lamb and Andy Peaks’ squad we looking for their third victory in front of the cameras.
Peaks made one enforced change, with Jamie Jellis out through suspension so Callum Reilly came into midfield, and Dan Creaney took a spot on the bench, returning to the squad after his one game out.
In blazing heat pushing 30 degrees Sports got the game underway with The Lambs attacking the Meadow Street end in the first half and they did just that with Milnes picking up the loose ball in the middle and Fin loaded a cross from the right for Deacon to leap and head home to send the partisan crowd wild and put Peaks’ side top of the league! (1-0, 2 mins)
The Lambs continued to press and forced a corner on and from it The Lambs doubled their advantage in similar fashion with Milnes finding Finn on the right and his ball into was headed home by Deacon again (2-0, 5 mins)
Tshikuna looked to make it three on 6 but sent his lob on the bound, high over the target, and a foul set up Lawlor with a freekick but Singh took it easily.
Arlott-John then pulled the ball back from the left for Reilly on 14, but his shot found an unsuspecting fan on the terracing and a superb run down the left wing into the area culminated in a low ball through the Turbines defence but it was just too much for the incoming Finn on the right.
Peterborough’s pressure around 18 forced a corner through Miles’ shot which Cockerill-Mollett put his body in the way of, and it came to nothing for Sports.
After a required drinks break on 27, Tamworth went back on the attack. Tshikuna found his way blocked twice, and then Arlott-John drilled the ball into the area but Tshikuna’s side footed goal bound shot was prevented from increasing the scoreline by the visiting defence.
Reilly and Lawlor both went for the same ball on the half way line on 33, and both needed treatment but it was the Lambs man who was booked for his efforts, and there was a booking for Fox on 38 when he held Arlott-John back as he tried to make headway down the left.
Milne’s sent his freekick into the box and Cockerill-Mollett was just a whisker away with his head, directing it just past the far post.
Tshikuna worked hard to get the ball down the right to Finn, who in turn bear his man and found Deacon, but his shot was knocked away for a corner and although Cockeril-Mollett bundled the ball home, the referee spotted a push and ruled out the close range finish.
And then on 44, Deacon nearly made it a hattrick, chasing the high ball down before heading it over the advancing Crook into the right of the area, but ultimately fired wide of the right hand post.
Four minutes added time was shown at the end of the half which ended without further incident, and the Lambs were roundly applauded off the field.
After a refreshing break both on and off the field, The Lambs got the second half underway and went on the offensive, Finn cut in and found Deacon who found Tshikuna and then Reilly on 46, but the latter’s powerful shot was straight into the crowded box and came back off a Peterborough defender.
Sports responded strongly keeping The Lambs back in the final third and forcing a couple of flagkicks, which forced Tamworth to defend.
Deacon and McGlinchley clashed heads on 55 meaning both physios came onto the field and both players had to leave the field for treatment but both were able to continue.
Finn was in the right place to pick up a header into the box from Arlott-John on 58 but couldn’t get his shot on the turn past the last man, and Cullinane-Liburd was booked for a push on 59.
A flowing move out of the Lambs back line on 62 involving Tshikuna, Milnes and Arlott-John, ended with an off target shot from the latter, and a deep cross from the same plater on 63 nearly caught Crook unawares but he was able to catch the ball under the crossbar before Finn closed him down.
Johnson was booked for pulling back Deacon on 65 giving Milnes the freekick in the left channel, and Deacon rose above his marker but didn’t really test Crook.
And the same Sports player upended Arlott-John on the left a minute later, but escaped a second card in quick succession so Milnes sent the ball into the box again and Crook gathered it low.
Peterborough raced to the other end and Fowkes found space and time to shoot low at Singh on 69 and this heralded another drinks break and a couple of changes for Andy Peaks’ side.
Creaney partnered Deacon up front for the final 20 minutes, and it was the former who nearly bagged his third of the afternoon on 75 but fired past the right hand post from the left of the box.
And then a unselfishly on 76, Creaney was played in by Deacon but the striker put his shot wide of the post with Crook on the floor.
And the third did come on 78, when Williams released Creaney into the left channel and although Deacon was available on the right with only one defender nearby he decided to go alone and beat Crook with an angled shot into the top right corner. (3-0, 78 mins)
Finn pull the ball back from the right byline and found Creaney on 80 but his goalbound shot was batted away by Crook, and McGlinchley was booked in the Lambs next move.
Lambs sub Jones then burst through and his low strike was denied by Crook who recovered quick to deny Finn’s close range follow up from making it four for the afternoon.
Five minutes added time was shown at the end of the second half, and Singh was called upon to deny a low shot from Fowkes at his near post on 92, in the final action of another clean sheet and three points for the table topping The Lambs.
