Tamworth returned to the Compare the Build Stadium after the goalless draw at Alfreton extended top of the Vanarama National League North table manager of the month Andy Peaks’ unbeaten run to eleven games.
The Celt Army, under the management of former Jamaican international and Birmingham City player Clayton Donaldson had nearly beaten The Lambs in the return fixture earlier in the season, and came into the game in 14th place.
Peaks had added two names since the trip to North Street with Chris Wreh returning on loan from Hartlepool United, and new signing Munashe Sundire joining the squad from Slough Town and made three changes with Matt Curley and Kyle Finn returning after illness, and Ty Deacon replacing the suspended Dan Creaney.
Celtic kicked off with The Lambs attacking the Meadow Street end in the first half and the ball was in the Tamworth box first, from a long Donaldson throw which was met by Allan in the box but his shot was off target.
Deacon knocked it to Finn in the halfway line on 3 and his cross field ball to Williams allowed an attack down the left wing but his ball into the area rose over the far corner of bar and post.
Williams caused more problems on 7 with a low ball to the near post which Deacon collected but it was nipped off his toes and cleared by Assenso.
A foul on the left set up Farsley with a freekick on 11 which Allan rose highest to head back into the anger area, but Coulson’s header, under pressure, went wayward.
Tonks launched a long throw from the Cross Street side of the ground on 12 but play had to be stopped when Cullinane-Liburd went down holding his head, and was restarted shortly after but Milnes ball into the area was taken by Leban.
A Finn corner was well placed into the six yard box on 15 but cleared with a mighty defensive boot, and Tonks got to try his throw again as The Lambs maintained the early pressure.
A foul by on Evans on Tshikuna on the edge of the D on 21 set him up with the deadball but he lifted it over the wall and the cross bar.
Milnes was denied what looked like the opening goal, by a good stop from Leban after an incisive through ball on 26 saw him go one on one, on the angle in the right of the box and Tshikuna picked his spot but saw his shot come back off Misambo and balloon into the arms of Leban on 29.
At the other end Atkinson drilled his low shot from 35 yards wide of the left hand upright, and there were shouts for handball against Evans when Curley nipped the ball into Deacon in the box but no foul or penalty was given.
Then, Donaldson got the better of Cullinane-Liburd down the left wing and a pull by the Tamworth man earned him a yellow card for his efforts. The freekick deflected out for a right sided corner and Atkinson found Misambo but he glanced his header well wide of the far post.
Play stopped on 39 when Donaldson went down in the centre circle and required prolonged treatment, and when play resumed Tshikuna picked the ball up on the edge of the box, from Williams cut back, and went for goal but shot wide of the mark by a yard or so.
A couple more Tonks throws brought Leban into action without really threatening as the game moved into added time and ended without a goal for either side.
The Lambs restarted proceedings attacking the Castle End with the sun dropping behind it casting long shadows up the pitch and at the end of those shadows on 47 Wadsworth half volleyed at Singh who collected easily.
A foul by Misambo on Finn on the left by the tunnel on 49 set up Mines’ freekick which was met by the head of Cullinane-Liburd, but he directed it the wrong side of the far post and into the hoardings.
Another Milnes deadball came a minute later and a push on Cullinane-Liburd in the box went unpunished, and when the player stood up he was pushed down to the ground again but was then shown a second yellow for his protestations at the referee, to leave Tamworth a man down for the remainder.
Coulson turned a span on a deep cross into the area on 56 but fired his half volley over the target, and this allowed The Lambs to make a defensive change with Dolman replacing Tshikuna.
There was even further confusion on the hour when Finn went past the keeper and put the ball into the net, but it was ruled out for offside despite the keeper, our of his area, having touched in the build up play.
And The Lambs then took the lead via Tonks’ weapon which saw his long throw bounce in the area and Leban was unable to prevent it from going past him and into the back of the net (1-0, 65 mins)
Milnes was denied by Leban who pulled of a close range double save on 67 and Tamworth continued to work hard to keep the ball away from the back third while also going for a possible second as the minutes ticked on and substitutions peppered the play.
And so into the final ten minutes and The Lambs set up with 9 behind the ball although Allan did manage to get a header down, in a crowded box with four remaining, that went past the far post.
Tonks struck low from the left of the box on 90 forcing Leban into a parry which Deacon wasn’t quite able to follow up as the game went into an unknown period of added time.
A last ditch freekick following a foul on the right by Williams went long and out and The Lambs made a late change and Misambo was shown a straight red for a late challenge on sub Arlott-John on the halfway line to even the numbers for the final throws of the match which ended with celebration on the pitch and terraces, once again.
