Match Report

At a dank Lamb Tamworth welcomed Leiston onto the 3G surface which had escaped the downpour causing any problem, unlike other grounds around the country. In the 1st Round Qualifying of the FA Trophy, and with £2,450 on offer to the winners Tamworth made a handful of changes to the side that defeated Stratford in midweek with Creaney and Clement coming in for Beswick and Kazboni

The visitors got the game underway with Tamworth attacking the Castle End in the first half and they did just that with Creaney whipping in a couple of dangerous crosses. Waite made a strong run to the edge of the box on 6 and fired low for Beckwith to drop and smother it.

Hoenes forced a corner with a deflected right wing cross on 9 ad Clement’s similar ball on 12 forced another on the same side.

Creaney met the near post ball with a downward header and it was put behind for another which the keeper took.

Clement found Waite with a delightful reverse ball on 13 but his shot deflected out for a flag kick which Leiston broke from but failed to capitalise on.

On 17, Creaney fired in another left wing cross but it was too long for Waite to meet at the far post. Waite closed the loose ball down and forced another corner on the right on 23 but the visitors cleared their lines and forced one of their own which Aitkens headed at Singh.

Fry curled an effort just around the post on 27 with Beckwith in full flight.

Hoenes made it into the box with the ball on 29 and was bundled down but his claim for a penalty was waved away so when Waite received it he found Hoenes in the area again, who rounded the keeper and slotted it home (1-0, 30 mins)

Singh put the ball behind for a Leiston corner on 35 but the resulting shot from Odelusi was easy for him to stop at his far post.

Hoenes spotted an opening on 39 but cleared the away end with his ballooned shot, however Waite did nothing wrong with his finish in the next move, taking it into the box, around the keeper and in off a sliding defender at the near right hand) post for his 7th of the season (2-0, 40 mins)

Tamworth pushed forwards and Fry’s low shot resulted in a corner on the left on 44 which Magunda headed over the target from the back post in the final action of the first half.

The Lambs restarted proceedings with the rain now just a light drizzle over the surface.

It took a while for the first chance of the second half to come, and in the 55th minute Waite lofted a shot from the left of the box over the target and failed to trouble Beckwith.

On 58 Yafai worked hard to get the ball into the box and set up Hoenes, but the resulting shot was high and over the target from 12 yards.

Creaney saw his low cross put behind for a left sided flagkick on 62 and Creaney headed Clement’s ball in off the far post to make it 3-0.

Hoenes advanced into the area on 65 and squared it for Creaney to sidefoot home but the flag was up when the shot went wide of the mark and The Lambs went close again on 68 when Waite skimmed the top of the bar with a shot from distance.

After a number of changes across both sides, the game was able to get back to a more natural flow and on 80 Hoenes went through from a quick freekick but despite beating Beckwith with a low angled finish his shot struck the outside of the left hand post and went out of play.

Substitute Reid’s cross took a touch at the near post for a left sided corner on 83 and Yafai struck a curling shot which Beckwith on 85.

At the other end a foul in the D set up Leiston with a deadball which Davies struck low and Singh stopped it easily.
