Match Report

After Wednesday’s two all draw with Corby Town Tamworth returned to The CR MOT Community Stadium at The Lamb to take on opponents on an equivalent standing in Basford United from the Northern Premier.
Chris Cox, who had signed earlier that day from Stratford Town, made his pre-season debut in the final run out prior to the league kick off in seven days while Joe Magunda and Charlie Shaw were both unavailable after picking up knocks against The Steelemen.

After a minutes applause for Rashaan Frances brother Kaheen the visitors got the game underway. Tamworth attacking the Meadow Street End were put under pressure at the Castle End in the early exchanges but calmly dealt with the pressure.
And when Creaney latched onto a ball over the halfway line in the second minute his lob from 35 yards on the right dropped over Preston in the Basford goal, but also just wide of the left hand post.
Obeng took a tumble but recovered as the ref called play back on 4 and Beswick’s freekick was met by the head of Yafai but he couldn’t direct it on target.
A right sided corner on 8 was just over the head of Cox and in the next move Yafai struck a low shot at Preston which the keeper took easily.
Hoenes’ shot from 18 yards took a deflection out for a corner on the left, and Yafai struck a low shot which was cleared off the line.
Reid pulled off a fine strike which Singh held onto strongly and then Yafai squeezed through and hit a shot at Preston on 23 which the keeper cleared away.
The Lambs enjoyed a spell of possession and nearly made it count on 30 but Hoenes’ ball was cut out by Richards.
After Tamworth lost the ball in the midfield area, Basford advanced and Rowe-Turner brought Thomas down on the edge of the area on 34 and visiting captain Reid curled the deadball onto the top of the bar with Singh in full flight.
Preston leapt high to deny Hoenes cross from the right from finding anyone in the box on 43 in the final action of the first half.

HT: TAMWORTH 0 0 BASFORD UNITED

Tamworth made a change during the break before restarting proceedings and they showed some encouraging signs going forwards but not real chances for them, or United in the opening exchanges.
Gough struck from the left diagonally across the face of goal and out past the far post on 65. A drilled shot from Richards was headed away by the Lambs defence on 68 but only as far as Hearn who hooked his shot over the bar.
Manager’s son Chettle struck a right footed effort from 30 yards just past the right hand post on 76.
Chances were definitely coming at a premium as Wallis punched a freekick clear on 85 and the final whistle blew on the preseason warm up.
