Coalville Town
Tamworth welcomed Coalville Town to The CR MOT Community Stadium for the first time in the club’s histories for the Preliminary Round of the Southern League Challenge Cup.
The Ravens got the game underway and in the 4th minute Berrgidge nearly became the first Coalville player to score at The Lamb after a poor touch by Verma gave him time to advance on the box but he couldn’t get past Singh on the edge of the area and the keeper denied him relatively easily,
In the fifth minute the ball fell to Lait on the edge of the box and he struck right footed just past the left hand post.
A flick on by Waite into the path of Asante on 12 caught the latter just off side and he was caught by a late challenge off Ebanks on 14 setting up Lait with the dead ball which he curled just wide of the mark.
A short pass from Waite to Asante set up the latter with a right footed curler on 23 but he couldn’t get the bend on it that it needed to test Varnham-Smith.
Asante was upended in front of the away dugout by Otomola on 28 and picked up a yellow card for his efforts as The Lambs continued to enjoy the lions share of possession and after squashing a Coalville freekick Asante was set free on the right but the angle was very tight and his shot high and wide.
Wright upended Ebanks at the other end on 34 and The Lambs cleared it and worked it over the half way line, eventually falling to Lait on the left of the box and his shot took a slight deflection off the covering defender to wrong foot the keeper and give The Lambs the lead (1-0, 35 mins)
Waite forced a corner on 37 and weaved his way into the left of the box on 39 but both times the visitors defended strongly.
Otomola latched onto a low pass into the box on 41 and fired low for Singh to gather at his near post, but The Lambs made it 2-0 on 42 when Asante held the ball up, knocked it back for Wright and he smashed it over the top of the keeper and into the back of the net from 20 yards out (2-0, 42 mins)
The Lambs went on the attack in the one minute added time and Verma powered a header over the bar from a corner shortly before the whistle blew.
Tamworth restarted proceedings and both sides came out of the blocks quickly.
On 50, Freeman was booked for a foul on Asante on the halfway line as the home side looked to break. Finn made space form himself to fire at the keeper on 57 and Asante drilled the ball back in but it was cleared.
On the hour McGlinchey hit a rising shot from 25 yards and Finn curled his effort just around the post at the other end. Finn was then instrumental in The Lambs third finding Waite on the left of the box and his shot deflected off the covering defender past the keeper. (3-0, 62 mins)
And a minute later Lait notched his second, a header from the left of the box off a corner went in at the far post off the defender again. (4-0, 63 mins)
Superb work from Finn down the right got the ball into the box on 68 and he cut it back for Asante to direct it home inside the near post (5-0, 68 mins)
Thorne replaced Dunkley after the defender took a knock on 73, and Shaw picked up a booking for a challenge on the half way line on 73 too.
A rare chance fell to Coalville sub Creaney on 74, but he couldn’t direct his header on target and after Medford came on, Raven’s captain Towers forced Singh into a fine save on 80.
At the other end The Lambs went close but Lait’s shot was saved and Verma put two header’s on or near the target without managing to take the tally to six.
But it was six on 83 when Waite made light work of the visiting defence and rolled the ball into the back of the net to make it six, the first time The Lambs had hit six since their last victory in a cup game – 1011 days previously against Corby in the FA Trophy in November 2015.
One minute added time was shown at the end of the game and The Lambs duly celebrated a well deserved victory.
